Single phase vs three phase EV charging in Australia
Updated 18 May 2026
Three phase EV charging sounds better. Faster has to mean better, right? Not always — and for most Australian homes, three phase is overkill. Here's the honest decision tree.
The big rule
Three phase only helps you if your EV's onboard charger can actually accept three phase. Many can't. A 22kW wall unit feeding an EV with a 7kW onboard charger delivers 7kW — same as a single phase charger costing half as much.
What's onboard your EV
The onboard charger is the bit inside the EV that converts AC from your wall charger to DC for the battery. Common Australian EVs and their onboard AC capacity:
- Tesla Model 3 / Y — 11kW three phase (older), 11kW three phase (current)
- Tesla Model S / X — 11kW or 16.5kW three phase
- BYD Atto 3 / Seal — 7kW single phase or 11kW three phase (model dependent)
- Polestar 2 — 11kW three phase
- Audi e-tron / Q4 e-tron — 11kW or 22kW three phase
- Hyundai IONIQ 5 / 6 — 11kW three phase
- Kia EV6 / EV9 — 11kW three phase
- MG ZS EV / MG4 — 6.6kW or 7kW single phase
- LDV eT60 / eDeliver 9 — 11kW three phase
- Mercedes EQ range — 11kW or 22kW three phase
Always check your owner's manual — manufacturers change spec across model years.
What you get from each
| Setup | Charge rate | Hours for 60kWh (full charge) |
|---|---|---|
| Single phase 7kW wall charger + 7kW onboard EV | 7kW | ~9 hours |
| Three phase 11kW wall charger + 11kW onboard EV | 11kW | ~6 hours |
| Three phase 22kW wall charger + 11kW onboard EV | 11kW | ~6 hours (no extra benefit) |
| Three phase 22kW wall charger + 22kW onboard EV | 22kW | ~3 hours |
What single phase looks like at home
About 90% of Australian homes are single phase. The supply from the street has one active wire plus neutral. The maximum draw for a 7kW EV charger is around 32 amps single phase — fits inside a typical home main supply with room for other loads. No supply upgrade needed.
What three phase looks like at home
Three phase brings three active wires plus neutral, each carrying up to 32A. Maximum charger draw is around 32A × 3 = 22kW. Three phase is common on rural blocks (irrigation pumps, sheds, workshops), on some larger lifestyle properties, and in newer builds where the developer specified it. Most suburban Mildura, Irymple and Red Cliffs homes don't have it.
The honest call for most people
If you charge overnight (10 hours), a 7kW single phase charger does the job for any EV smaller than a 100kWh battery. Even a near-flat Tesla Model Y gets fully charged in the hours you're asleep. Three phase is genuinely useful when:
- You drive more than 200km a day and need a fast top-up between trips
- Your EV accepts 11kW or 22kW onboard and you've already got three phase to the house
- You're charging multiple EVs and need to share the rate
- You're running a small fleet from a depot
If your home is single phase and you'd need a $5,000+ supply upgrade just to support the charger — and your EV only accepts 7kW anyway — three phase is money down the drain.
